    Vereinheitlichte Anfrageverarbeitung in heterogenen und verteilten Multimediadatenbanken

    Multimedia retrieval is an essential part of today's world. This situation is observable in industrial domains, e.g., medical imaging, as well as in the private sector, visible by activities in manifold Social Media platforms. This trend led to the creation of a huge environment of multimedia information retrieval services offering multimedia resources for almost any user requests. Indeed, the encompassed data is in general retrievable by (proprietary) APIs and query languages, but unfortunately a unified access is not given due to arising interoperability issues between those services. In this regard, this thesis focuses on two application scenarios, namely a medical retrieval system supporting a radiologist's workflow, as well as an interoperable image retrieval service interconnecting diverse data silos. The scientific contribution of this dissertation is split in three different parts: the first part of this thesis improves the metadata interoperability issue. Here, major contributions to a community-driven, international standardization have been proposed leading to the specification of an API and ontology to enable a unified annotation and retrieval of media resources. The second part issues a metasearch engine especially designed for unified retrieval in distributed and heterogeneous multimedia retrieval environments. This metasearch engine is capable of being operated in a federated as well as autonomous manner inside the aforementioned application scenarios. The remaining third part ensures an efficient retrieval due to the integration of optimization techniques for multimedia retrieval in the overall query execution process of the metasearch engine.Egal ob im industriellen Bereich oder auch im Social Media - multimediale Daten nehmen eine immer zentralere Rolle ein. Aus diesem fortlaufendem Entwicklungsprozess entwickelten sich umfangreiche Informationssysteme, die Daten für zahlreiche Bedürfnisse anbieten. Allerdings ist ein einheitlicher Zugriff auf jene verteilte und heterogene Landschaft von Informationssystemen in der Praxis nicht gewährleistet. Und dies, obwohl die Datenbestände meist über Schnittstellen abrufbar sind. Im Detail widmet sich diese Arbeit mit der Bearbeitung zweier Anwendungsszenarien. Erstens, einem medizinischen System zur Diagnoseunterstützung und zweitens einer interoperablen, verteilten Bildersuche. Der wissenschaftliche Teil der vorliegenden Dissertation gliedert sich in drei Teile: Teil eins befasst sich mit dem Problem der Interoperabilität zwischen verschiedenen Metadatenformaten. In diesem Bereich wurden maßgebliche Beiträge für ein internationales Standardisierungsverfahren entwickelt. Ziel war es, einer Ontologie, sowie einer Programmierschnittstelle einen vereinheitlichten Zugriff auf multimediale Informationen zu ermöglichen. In Teil zwei wird eine externe Metasuchmaschine vorgestellt, die eine einheitliche Anfrageverarbeitung in heterogenen und verteilten Multimediadatenbanken ermöglicht. In den Anwendungsszenarien wird zum einen auf eine föderative, als auch autonome Anfrageverarbeitung eingegangen. Abschließend werden in Teil drei Techniken zur Optimierung von verteilten multimedialen Anfragen präsentiert

    Stretch controlled shading capabilities of special elastomeric silicone films

    A hitherto unexploited effect: the reversible stretch-induced change of translucency and transparency of certain silicone materials is experimentally investigated with regard to an application in a new type of shading system for biaxial bent, free-form building envelopes. In a first step the silicone raw materials showing the effect are processed into membrane shape and the stretch-dependent optical characteristics of the silicone film samples are examined. Shading effects are measured during cyclic and long term uniaxial tension tests. For multiaxial loading conditions, as appearing in planar biaxial tension tests with cross shaped specimens and bulge tests with inflated circular specimens, optical inhomogeneity effects due to locally varying elongations are documented. Further results concerning a variable transparency depending on the distance of the observer and an object behind the membrane are discussed. A conceptual application of the materials into translucent facades for shading purposes is presented. The closed cavity concept of planar stretched films located between window screens and the implementation of silicone films as inflatable shading structures are discussed. Furthermore, the advantages of silicone films in these kinds of cladding types are pointed out, as typical problems i.e. fogging and high-temperature stability pose no major issue

    Unified access to media metadata on the web: Towards interoperability using a core vocabulary.

    The goal of the W3C's Media Annotation Working Group (MAWG) is to promote interoperability between multimedia metadata formats on the Web. As experienced by everybody, audiovisual data is omnipresent on today's Web. However, different interaction interfaces and especially diverse metadata formats prevent unified search, access, and navigation. MAWG has addressed this issue by developing an interlingua ontology and an associated API. This article discusses the rationale and core concepts of the ontology and API for media resources. The specifications developed by MAWG enable interoperable contextualized and semantic annotation and search, independent of the source metadata format, and connecting multimedia data to the Linked Data cloud. Some demonstrators of such applications are also presented in this article

    A multi-scale epidemic model of Salmonella infection with heterogeneous shedding∗

    Salmonella strains colonize the digestive tract of farm livestock, such as chickens or pigs, without affecting them, and potentially infect food products, representing a threat for human health ranging from food poisoning to typhoid fever. It has been shown that the ability to excrete the pathogen in the environment and contaminate other animals is variable. This heterogeneity in pathogen carriage and shedding results from interactions between the host’s immune response, the pathogen and the commensal intestinal microbiota. In this paper we propose a novel generic multiscale modeling framework of heterogeneous pathogen transmission in an animal population. At the intra-host level, the model describes the interaction between the commensal microbiota, the pathogen and the inflammatory response. Random fluctuations in the ecological dynamics of the individual microbiota and transmission at between-host scale are added to obtain a drift-diffusion PDE model of the pathogen distribution at the population level. The model is further extended to represent transmission between several populations. The asymptotic behavior as well as the impact of control strategies including cleaning and antimicrobial administration are investigated through numerical simulation

    Genome-Wide Meta-Analyses of Breast, Ovarian, and Prostate Cancer Association Studies Identify Multiple New Susceptibility Loci Shared by at Least Two Cancer Types.

    UNLABELLED: Breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers are hormone-related and may have a shared genetic basis, but this has not been investigated systematically by genome-wide association (GWA) studies. Meta-analyses combining the largest GWA meta-analysis data sets for these cancers totaling 112,349 cases and 116,421 controls of European ancestry, all together and in pairs, identified at P < 10(-8) seven new cross-cancer loci: three associated with susceptibility to all three cancers (rs17041869/2q13/BCL2L11; rs7937840/11q12/INCENP; rs1469713/19p13/GATAD2A), two breast and ovarian cancer risk loci (rs200182588/9q31/SMC2; rs8037137/15q26/RCCD1), and two breast and prostate cancer risk loci (rs5013329/1p34/NSUN4; rs9375701/6q23/L3MBTL3). Index variants in five additional regions previously associated with only one cancer also showed clear association with a second cancer type. Cell-type-specific expression quantitative trait locus and enhancer-gene interaction annotations suggested target genes with potential cross-cancer roles at the new loci. Pathway analysis revealed significant enrichment of death receptor signaling genes near loci with P < 10(-5) in the three-cancer meta-analysis. SIGNIFICANCE: We demonstrate that combining large-scale GWA meta-analysis findings across cancer types can identify completely new risk loci common to breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers. We show that the identification of such cross-cancer risk loci has the potential to shed new light on the shared biology underlying these hormone-related cancers.     VAnalyzer: a MPEG-7 based Semantic Video Annotation Tool

    International audienceMuch recent research deals with the automatic extraction of multimedia metadata. While automatic extraction is already well understood for low-level features (e.g., color), it remains an open issue for high-level (semantic) features [1]. In this context, an evaluation of currently available MPEG-7 annotation tools and frameworks has been performed [2]. Most tools can extract low-level features automatically, and some also provide functionalities to describe highlevel features manually. This paper highlights VAnalyzer1, an MPEG-7 based semantic video annotation tool, which is also able to extract certain semantic annotation automatically. Here, we only introduce the features of the VAnalyzerwithout discussing its architecture. Finally, the demonstration procedure will be highlighted
